Other than the most popular cluster process for the generation interconnection to the
electrical grid, Fast Track Process and Independent Study Process also provide
generation interconnect to the grid provided your development meets certain
conditions set forth by the Transmission Provider. These alternate processes may lead
to a generation interconnection agreement in a time frame substantially shorter than
the cluster process.
Fast Track Process is governed by the FERC Small Generation Interconnection
Procedures (SGIP) pro forma instated by FERC in FERC order 2006 and have been
generally adopted by the Transmission Providers.
After seven years, in Nov 2013, FERC adopted major changes to the SGIP. These
changes are in favor of the developers like you involved in the renewable wind and
solar developments (Docket -13-2-000 Order 792; URL = https://www.ferc.gov/whats-
new/comm-meet/2013/112113/E-1.pdf ).
The revisions to the SGIP are in the customers favor by allowing more MW to be
connected on the grid (grid capacity), and allows you a) to get a pre-application report,
b) increases the threshold for participating in the process, c) allows Fast Track customer
options meeting and the supplemental review, and d) and customer review of the
required upgrade. If not already incorporated in the Transmission Provider Tariff, these
improvements will be most likely adopted by the Transmission Providers, even if they
are not under FERC jurisdictions. .
